DOMAINE DE CHALAIN ON THE SHORES OF LAKE CHALAIN
While the Jura has many exceptional natural attractions, Lake Chalain is undoubtedly one of the jewels in its crown!
As the largest natural lake in the department with a surface area of 230 hectares, its turquoise waters and lush green surroundings make it an ideal place to relax and enjoy a wide range of activities all year round.
The richness of its fauna and flora is remarkable, and for fishermen it is an unmissable spot for species such as whitefish, lake trout, pike, perch and zander.
The Neolithic lake dwellings discovered at the beginning of the 20th century bear witness to a significant settlement here as early as 6,000 BC, and have earned it a place on UNESCO's World Heritage List along with 110 other prehistoric stilt-house settlements in and around the Alps.
Since 2017, the Jura département has labelled this site a Sensitive Natural Area so that it can undertake actions to improve the ecological quality of the lake and preserve it.
