DOMAINE DE CHALAIN ON THE SHORES OF LAKE CHALAIN

While the Jura has many exceptional natural attractions, Lake Chalain is undoubtedly one of the jewels in its crown!

As the largest natural lake in the department with a surface area of 230 hectares, its turquoise waters and lush green surroundings make it an ideal place to relax and enjoy a wide range of activities all year round.

The richness of its fauna and flora is remarkable, and for fishermen it is an unmissable spot for species such as whitefish, lake trout, pike, perch and zander.

The Neolithic lake dwellings discovered at the beginning of the 20th century bear witness to a significant settlement here as early as 6,000 BC, and have earned it a place on UNESCO's World Heritage List along with 110 other prehistoric stilt-house settlements in and around the Alps.

Since 2017, the Jura département has labelled this site a Sensitive Natural Area so that it can undertake actions to improve the ecological quality of the lake and preserve it.

"A Passion for Nature"

The Departmental Council, which owns the lake, is taking all the necessary steps to preserve it for future generations while ensuring it remains a holiday destination accessible to all. As such, a major decision was taken in the autumn of 2022 to return the lake to its natural state, guaranteeing access to the beaches while ensuring the long-term survival of this exceptional site.

The Domaine de Chalain is a leisure centre located on the eastern shore of the lake. A beach is also accessible in the municipality of Doucier, on the southern shore (swimming is supervised in July and August). In contrast, access to the water is authorised in the municipality of Marigny but swimming there is unsupervised and undertaken at the bather's own risk.

"Happiness within Reach"

For those who wish to take full advantage of the site as part of their stay, there are 33 beautifully appointed chalets available on the Domaine. 17 of them have been awarded the "Fishing Accommodation" label and offer all the amenities needed by keen fishermen.

The Lagons Aqua Park

The Lagons Aqua Park completes the range of leisure activities. However, it will be closed in 2024 due to soaring energy costs.

Jurassians and close neighbours, holidaymakers and visitors passing through, be aware of the beauty and fragility of the area and be sure to respect this natural treasure in each and every one of your activities!
