What changes for the Domaine de Chalain in 2023

DOMAINE DE CHALAIN IN 2023

The Departmental Council, which owns the lake and the Domaine de Chalain, unanimously took two major decisions on 30 September 2022 regarding Lake Chalain, an important environmental asset of the Jura: a commitment to restore the lake to its natural functioning throughout the year, and the end of outdoor accommodation on the Domaine.

Stabilising the lake’s shoreline at its natural low water point is necessary to give it every chance of regenerating itself by restoring the self-purifying function of the west shore. Climate change is definitely here and accelerating environmental phenomena. We no longer have time for half measures or postponing decisions, as this is a question of the legacy we will leave to future generations.

This vision for the future will mean the end of large-scale camping. Aware of the fact that it’s no longer possible to add customers to a site that’s already overcrowded and whose cliffs need to be secured, the Departmental Council has chosen to focus on local tourism for “day visitors” to the Domaine de Chalain, by limiting the number of stays to reduce the environmental impact created. This decision will mitigate the closure of Marigny beach without saturating Doucier beach, and allow a review of access to the lake and the various activities on offer.

The current vision for this site has resulted in several fundamental decisions.

Accommodation

The only accommodation unaffected by closure of the campsite are 33 wooden chalets which will be marketed by the Domaine de Chalain in the form of furnished tourist accommodation (gites), without the services that were offered by the 4* campsite.

This accommodation will be marketed via the www.chalain.com website from the end of February.

Les Lagons aqua park

In 2023, the estimated cost of electricity will be 3.5 times higher for this facility, which was 80% used by campers. It therefore would have been environmentally and economically irresponsible to open it for the season.

Les Lagons aqua park will therefore be closed for 2023. This policy will be reviewed in the future in light of changes in energy costs and technical constraints.

Services

Available in 2023: pedal boat and stand-up paddleboard hire, snack bar, ice cream parlour, bar, electric scooter hire.

Beaches

The two beaches on the Domaine will continue to be accessible for swimming. Sanitary facilities will be available at various locations and free of charge.

Lifeguard cover will continue to be offered on the “south” beach of the Domaine, from 1 July to 31 August.

The “north” beach of the Domaine, which will no longer be sandy, will also be open but unsupervised and now benefits from a generous area behind the beach as a result of the campsite’s closure. This beach is being redeveloped for the 2024 season to offer an even more pleasant and safer area for swimming.
